Canada Engineering Month Spotlight: Mevan Dheeraratne
March is National Engineering Month and we're recognizing some of the engineers who drive innovation and reliability at Koch Fertilizer Canada.
What's your engineering specialty?
My engineering specialty is urea process engineering. I work with high‑pressure NH₃/CO₂ systems, carbamate chemistry, reactor and stripper performance and relief/pressure protection aspects of the plant. My focus includes process optimization, troubleshooting, equipment reliability, energy efficiency and ensuring safe, compliant operation. I also support turnaround planning, valve sizing and process safety evaluations.
How did you get interested in engineering?
My interest in engineering started in high school, when I found myself drawn to chemistry. Over time, I realized I had a strong interest in industrial processes and the challenge of solving technical problems. I decided to make engineering my career when I saw how the field combines analytical thinking with practical impact, improving operations, optimizing systems and contributing to safe and efficient production.

How has the engineering field evolved since your career began?
When I first entered engineering, many tasks relied on manual calculations, field experience and historical plant knowledge. Today, the field is far more digital and interconnected. Engineers now have access to powerful simulation tools, real‑time plant data and automated systems that make problem‑solving faster and more precise. The culture has also shifted — there is a much stronger focus on safety, environmental impact and continuous improvement. These changes have made the role more dynamic, analytical and impactful than ever before.
What's unique about being an engineer at Koch Fertilizer Canada?
What makes engineering at Koch Fertilizer Canada unique is the supportive culture. When I face a challenge, there are always people willing to help, and it’s easy to reach out and get guidance. The teamwork and openness here make it a great place to learn and grow.
